Prayer To Jesus Crucified in the miracle-working Icon of Zarvanytsya
(~ Composed by Metropolitan Athanasius Sheptytsky in 1742)
As I gaze upon You, O Jesus, in this Holy Icon from which graces and miraculous cures radiate constantly, I begin to realize Who You are and what I am. You are good, merciful and overflowing with love—I, wretched, unforgiving and weighted down with sin. Conscious of this I fearfully prostrate myself before You and as David, repentantly cry out to You: Have mercy on me, O God, according to your mercy; according to the multitude of your kindness blot out my iniquity, O ever merciful Jesus.
To the blind who have come to adore You before this Holy Icon, You have given sight. Enlighten me also with the rays of your grace so that I may see the malice of my transgressions. The mute, You have restored speech. Grant that I may become insensible to shame and mute to malice so that I could confess my sins with a heart truly contrite. You cleansed the wounds of lepers, cleanse my soul which is covered with the vileness of sin.
O Jesus, Infinite Love, hear the prayers of your servant whom you redeemed not with silver or gold, but with the priceless drops of Your Most Sacred Blood. Hear me, as I humbly call to You and do not turn your loving glance from me, lest the enemies of my soul mockingly reproach me saying: You trusted in Him! As I make my earthly sojourn, grant me the grace to have You always in my heart, in my thoughts, and on my lips, so that in the hereafter I could be with You in the Kingdome of Heaven forever and ever. О Пресолодкий Ісусе, Спасителю мій!
Ти зійшов з неба на землю, із Вітцівських нідр в утробу Пречистої Діви; прийняв чоловічество й поніс всі труди й терпіння на те, щоб мене прийняти знову до неба, з котрого разом з праотцями через неповздержаність я був вигнаний. Ти свойого життя не пожалував, щоби мене через гріх помершого оживотворити. Ти зістав до хреста прикований й дозволив на ньому бути вгору піднесений, щоб я побачив, як ти є добрим, милосердним й милостивим. Ти приклонив Твою Божественну голову, щоби мене уцілувати: розпростер свої всемогучі руки, щоби мене до Твойого серця, розжареного любов’ю, притягнути.
І що ж я на це? О темното, о злобо моя! Я не доглянув лише Твоєї любови до мене, не прийшов, не прив’язався до Тебе. Я полюбив радше дочасну красу цього світа як Тебе, невисказане, безконечне добро. Отже сьогодні, коли споглядаю на Тебе, пізнаю й себе. Тебе як благого, милосердного й себе окаянного. А це увидівши, обминає мене страх, припадаю до божественних Твоїх стіп і з каючимся Давидом кличу: «Помилуй мя, Боже, по великій милості Твоїй і по множеству щедрот Твоїх, очисти беззаконія моя».
О всемилостивий Ісусе! Ти зволив приходячим тут і посішаючим Тебе в цій святій Іконі темним прозріти: просвіти й мене світлом Твоєї ласки, щобим міг пізнати всі мої гріхи.
Ти отворив єси німим уста: дай і мені, онімівшому соромом і злобою, щобим совершенно сокрушенним серцем виповів всі мої гріхи. Ти очистив прокажених на тілі: очисти ж і мою душу, споганену болотом гріха.
О Ісусе, бездно любови! Вислухай благання Свойого слуги, котрого ні сріблом, ні золотом, лише своєю неоціненною найсвятішою кров’ю викупив єси. Вислухай мене, кличу зі зітханням, і не відверни від мене Свойого лиця, щоби знов ворог моєї душі з наругою не сказав мені: Отсе укріпився на йому! Дай мені тут на землі Тебе в серці, в умі і в устах всегда мати; а потім жити з Тобою в небесному царстві в безконечні віки віків.

From my earliest memory, we have said grace at the table before our family dinners. It’s a simple blessing, our Catholic grace. I think growing up we kids didn’t think much about it, just that it was one of those things we had to do before we could eat. But ritual has a way of embedding ideas into one’s consciousness over time, and now when I say grace, either with my family, with friends, or even alone, I am reminded of how lucky I am, we are, to be alive, thinking and breathing, and how blessed we are to have this food before us.
- Bless us O Lord, and these Thy gifts, for which we are about to receive, from Thy bounty, through Christ, our Lord, Amen.
That’s our grace. Simple isn’t it? Yet whenever I hear it or say it, it means so much more. I feel my family, alive or long passed, with me at the table or in a city far away. For this one simple prayer ties us together through time and distance.
I’m curious to learn of other traditions for saying a mealtime blessing. It wasn’t until I left home for college that I discovered that depending on one’s background, people say different prayers at mealtime, and some (maybe most?) none at all. A meal blessing doesn’t have to be tied to a religion. People in Japan say an expression of gratitude before every meal. Itadakimasu, which means “I humbly accept” is said, head bowed, before every meal, not just dinner.
My friends Suzanne and David, and their children Clara, Danny, and Audrey, hold hands and either say “Blessings on the meal” or they sing “Evening is here, the board is spread, thanks be to God, who gives us bread.” I get the feeling that the kids are sometimes embarrassed to sing their blessing, especially with guests, but personally I love it.
Do you have a tradition of saying a blessing before a meal? If so, would you please share it with us? Do you hold hands (we don’t)? Does one person lead grace, or do people take turns? Do you recite a standard blessing, or do you improvise?

Remember our Lord would love to hear your own thoughts in addition to your evening prayers as long as you give Him heart service not lip service. Don't be afraid to ask Him to bless your night and to help you the following day as you strive to share Eternal Life with Him someday in the bliss of what St. Thomas Aquinas called “our true native land,” Heaven!
